You Have The Time.

But you also have no time at all.

#1. Being Busy Is A Decision.

Being productive requires strategy.

#2. If You Are Not Good. 

The business is not good.

#3. Simplicity Creates Friction.

Because it leaves nowhere for your excuses to hide.

If we don’t find the capacity to grow. We take root.

Look, let’s just have a damn hard talk about your capacity.

You are busy; you are not productive.

If you sit down and map the past 24 hours, how many hours of leakage do you see?

No seriously.

Make a list of every hour and task, and I bet you will find the time.

Unless you are a doctor on an 18 hours shift with a solid 6 hours to sleep, you have time.

We are all victims of the busy mentality.

But that’s on us.

  • Not Facebook
  • Not the news
  • Not the government
  • Not our willpower
  • Not our bank account
  • Not our family.

We are deciding to waste time. Time we actually don’t have.

You’ve had a good run if you get a solid 70-80 years on this planet.

Why in the hell would we spend a large chunk of those 70 years:

  • Arguing with strangers on social media
  • Reading the ‘news’
  • Comparing ourselves with others
  • Doing a job we hate
  • Hanging out with people who don’t challenge us
  • Working with clients who won’t pay.

Why. Why. Why?

Because we have become afraid of the friction that simplicity brings to our lives.

Boredom, staring into space, silence, planning what we actually want.

I don’t know how many times per week business owners tell me they are too busy. I call bullshit.

Design what you do with your time. Live with intent.

  • Decide when you WANT  to work
  • Decide when you WANT to play
  • Decide when you WANT to say yes
  • Decide when you WANT to say no.

By making decisions based on purpose, you suddenly free yourself from the trap of being busy and become more fulfilled and productive.

  • Find 30mins, and you can run 5km
  • Find 1 hour and you can cook a meal
  • Find 45mins and you can play two rounds of MarioKart with your kid
  • Find 15mins and you can call a friend and ask how they are doing
  • Find 30secs and you can text a message to someone saying you love them.

By finding just three wasted hours in 24 to do these simple things, I bet life will feel a whole lot better!

So what’s your excuse?

#3. If It Is Meant To Be. It Will Be.

Many of us have some faith in humanity, a God, or the Universe. But why? Because we want to believe in something greater than our fragile bodies. That we can become more than we could possibly imagine. And that scares us.

As Lone Leaders we put ourselves under daily pressure fighting an unseeable enemy that we can never win against.

I don’t use the word war lightly, having grown up in the British military environment from birth until I left for university at 18, I know what war does to people.

Watching the launch of the Gulf War from my deck as a 10 year old, my Dad away for weeks and months at a time, often not knowing when he would come home. For some, they didn’t come home.

While I have a deep passion for the sacrifice of our military men and women make for our freedom, I am fundamentally against war. We are no longer fighting for our freedom, but something many of us will likely never see or benefit from. Power and control.

But growing up in this world it gave me many skills that you wouldn’t necessarily have in civilian life. We moved regularly, new schools every three years, a tribe that we would deeply connect with in different bases in different contexts, resilience and adaptation was key. Something I hold proudly in my toolbox now.

We lived behind heavily guarded fences, when there was conflict in the world, we were the first to know, the alert state changed, armed guards became more prominent and certain types of soldiers would disappear in the middle of the night.

Until I was 16/17 I felt that my path was to be in the military, my chosen professional as a cartographer on spy planes.

Something that become a sliding doors moment.

Having passed the tests, I was offered a place, but my Dad had other ideas. He said that he didn’t want me to be like him and said that I should only go in as an officer. But my time with the military was done. I wanted something different, I was going to break the mould and be the first in our family to go to university.

This context is important as I spent the most formative years being protected, in the most literal sense, with barbed wire and soldiers with guns, ready to defend at a moments notice.

It was a privileged life, but not an easy one.

As I come up to my 43rd birthday I have been out of that world for over 20 years, but I can still feel it, still shed a tear when I see soldiers slain in battle, still feel immense pride in what we expect of these people as their job.

If I’m honest one of my regrets in life was not serving my country, I’m not sure why, but it is something I have recently comes to terms with. It does however prompt the next question, my identity, what is it?

I realise that so much of what makes us, us is our upbringing, our influences and experiences that leave long term impact on your personality and beliefs.

With that said my war with my current identity has been as an athlete. Over the past two years I have struggled to find myself as an athlete. While I have been making huge changes in my life and business, this is one area that I have failed in.

There have been some speed bumps that were out of my control, but it has nonetheless made me realise that when we are not aligned with ourselves and our identity we cannot be fulfilled.

This is a realisation I had this week when I went for my first run in 5 months. I was slow, fat and struggled. But as I ran I realised that this is something worth fighting for. This is part of my identity that makes me better, mentally and physically.

Due to a recent injury I have to rethink the way I train, I can no longer take on the hours of running I used to be able to do, unless I want to risk long term spinal issues, and at 43, I’m not playing that game.

But life is a game of endurance, of taking each step, carefully but with the most energy you can muster.

Every day I couldn’t run I would think about it for hours, frustrated, miserable, lazy even.

But what I have learned through my treatment is that there are different ways to be the runner I want to be, be the person I want to be. That means changing my mindset towards the battles I fight.

For me being a runner is important. It’s very much part of me being me, the best version of me. So right now I have to choose my battles, because this is a war worth winning.

A better me. Thats the prize where everyone wins.

Whatever battle you face, whatever war you are waging. Make them the right ones. Ensure they are helping you become the best version of you.

Because in the end, you are only up against, you.

Allow Life To Take Your Breathe Away

It’s the sign that you are present and living.

#1. Give Up On Success. Commit To Fulfilment.

You can be fulfilled at any moment, but the success you must wait for.

#2. Be A Tribe Of One.

Stop giving a damn what others think. Get uncomfortably comfortable with being you and owning it.

#3. Overcome The Obstacle.

When you come up against an obstacle. Accept it is meant to be there. Breathe in for 4, breathe out for 4. Then take action.

My greatest growth came from when I stopped. Sat staring at a whiteboard for three months asking, what does moving forward look like.

I hate to be a cliche, but when you suffer trauma, it seems that there are two paths forward; ignorance is bliss, and you go back to BAU, or you are provoked onto a new path for your life.

It seems I landed in the latter, which created a deep relationship with my whiteboard and an extremely ugly navy blue velour, old lazy boy armchair.

One of my greatest weaknesses is patience. With myself specifically and then those around me. Hence, being a leader at times was my greatest test.

My impatience came from physical and mental pain. My body took a while to heal, but my mind longer. In that, my mortality was firmly presented to me, and I had no choice but to listen.

I wanted to be pain-free.

I wanted to be moving forward.

I wanted to be in control.

None of which I was achieving, and I was actively beating myself up over it.

Until… I stopped.

I hate to say it, but it was the greatest strategic move I have made for my business in its history, but it was so counterintuitive that I would never have previously considered it.

They say you should spend more time working on the business than in it, but it’s ways harder than it sounds.

What I discovered what not groundbreaking, but at the same time, it was life-changing.

The work that I was doing with clients was the most fulfilling I have ever done. I was fully engaged, focused on helping them move forward and, most importantly, not rushing between sessions or meetings.

That was the seed that created the change.

I had created the space to heal and the space to create. Writing had become a joy, whereas before, it was a process.

Solving challenges for the business had become just that, not yet more on the to-do list.

I stopped thinking that I HAD to ‘x’ or ‘y’; that capacity and focus started to come back, but it was different. More meaningful, full of intent and ultimately a bit scary.

When we stop and observe, we see that we usually hide in our busy lives. When I stopped, I realised that I had all this strength, but maybe I wasn’t using it correctly.

I got clarity on who I serve and how I want to do business. I started to do less to create more.

I became my coach, stood on the sidelines observing my behaviours, ready to give the half-time speech on how in some areas, I was weak and in others, strong. But most of all, I need to play my game.

We tell ourselves that we can’t take time off. We can’t afford the luxury of stepping back and watching for a moment to understand what the next step can be.

I liken this to my interactions with my daughter. I’m not a big ‘playing’ type of Dad, but I revel in watching her interact with the world and the impact she has in it. I am present and observing the wonder of life; I don’t necessarily have to participate.

The message that I share with the Lone Leaders I support almost on a weekly basis is that they need to give themselves permission to stop. Permission to breathe. Permission to ask if there is a better path.

Suppose you want to understand what’s actually possible. Stop. Revise your plan. Then go again.

Until next time, be selfish. You deserve it. But more importantly, you NEED it!

    This half-day workshop was laser-focused on a key operational challenge. How it could be improved in the next 60 days, versus the long-term strategic mindset shift required to change the company culture towards the objective.

  • Bring Departments Together

    A series of four workshops over two days was developed to bring together four brands, 50 people and senior management to understand and define the challenges and future needs of the team in this rapidly growing insurance company.

  • Creating Resilience In Leadership

    Working with senior leadership on the importance of resilience in business and especially leadership. A key part of our strategy workshops is developing the capability to implement purposeful strategy, not to develop a new to-do list.

  • Alignment Of Team & Strategy

    Over the course of 12 months, through a series of workshops and coaching, we supported a growing business in the development of its leadership skills to align with the strategic direction of the business and the development of two key concepts – ownership and communication.
